news FEBRUARY 2014

the summer skin hangover
Summer – the sun is shining, the music is playing and the drinks are flowing. It’s a time of year that we love to spend relaxing with friends and family enjoying a drink or two…or more. Let’s be honest, we’re all a little guilty of “overindulging” during the warmer months, which never plays out well for us the next day!
While there are some studies that show that red wine contains Resveratrol, which is good for our health and our skin, it is a myth to say that alcohol is actually good for us. The truth is, that the concentration of antioxidants in a glass of red wine is not enough to have significant health benefits and the preservatives that are added to wine can certainly have some negative effects. Dark spirits, pre-mixed drinks and beer are no better, with extremely high sugar contents.
Alcohol can affect the way you look the next day - and in the future. The more frequently you drink and the higher the consumption rate, the faster you will see its effects in your skin. Immediate signs of excessive alcohol consumption can be dehydration and breakout. Long term, it can cause pigmentation, dilated capillaries, red cheeks, deep wrinkles and skin irritations. Alcohol can also deplete our body of essential nutrients, especially the water-soluble vitamins, A, C, and Zinc, and not to mention your B Vitamins.

restoring the balance
As the saying goes ‘you are what you eat’. Ensure your diet is nutrient dense with:
Fresh produce
Wholegrains - brown rice, oats or even ‘superfood’ quinoa
Proteins - chickpeas, lentils, fish, eggs, nuts and lean meats
Purified water – try drinking at least 2l per day
For glowing skin, it’s to ditch:
Processed sugars
Anything white like flour, bread, muffins or pastries
High fats
Chocolate (sorry!)
And anything artificial – aspartame, diet drinks etc
Try to limit anything that is pre-packaged and canned
While a wholesome meal program is a great place to start, supplement your skin with products that have high quality topical vitamins such as B3, L-Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C), and Retinol (vitamin A). In the right formulation, dull skin, dehydration or breakout can be treated very effectively. •

what has morgan been up to?
2013 was a BIG year to say the least! Out of work it took me traveling through Nepal up to Everest Base Camp and Thailand, completed the 20km obstacle course of Tough Mudder in the Sunshine Coast and continuing community work for the Look Good Feel Better Program just to name a few. I also brought in a new skin care line into Togninis called Skinstitut, which has proven to have some amazing results for many of my clients and this year I will be continuing to do external education so I can obtain my Skinstitut Paramedical Skin Therapist badge.•
