open mic night

A line up better than any Splendour in the Grass, the Brisbane Open Mic night was a must see event of 2015. The rock-star duo, Benni and Jules hosted the night but weren’t alone, as the line up included Dmitri Papas, Justin Pace, Luke Reynolds & team, Lance Liufau, Bruce Sam and Clive Allrigh. Man, the night seriously had the best of the best. It was a night of education that cut and coloured its way through the Togninis salon, but also had the bubbles flowing as well. Cheers to Open Mic Night. •

benni takes on wa

Benni travelled to beautiful Perth to participant in StyleAid. StyleAid is a premier fashion fundraiser that showcased the best of local and international fashion. The stellar event raised funds to help support programs dedicated to people living with and affected by HIV/ AIDS. Great work Benni, such a fantastic event to be involved in. •

jules styles sydney

Jules Tognini, resident hipster, has been up to mischief again in the USA, promoting his ‘lil off the top’ channel with the dudes from evo to teach the Yankees all there is to know about hair. His beautiful wife, Erin and bundle of joy Iggy, obviously didn’t want to miss out on all the fun, so they jet-setted overseas to make sure Jules didn’t cause too much damage. Chop your way through the adventures by checking out the ‘lil off the top’ Instagram channel.•

true or false?

Misting your skin while flying will help keep it hydrated? False!
Contrary to what we have been taught misting your skin with water-based sprits will actually make your skin MORE dehydrated. Why? The cabin air is dry. Moisture acts like a magnet. It attracts and is attracted to moisture elsewhere and will always go to the driest area. In this case the cabin air. So essentially misting your skin will evaporate the moisture out of your skin leaving it dryer and dehydrated. How do we combat this?

While flying always have a SPF moisturiser on. After all you are closer to the sun and it will act as a protective barrier. (try Skinstitut SPF 50+)
Make sure you keep your fluids up. Hydrate from the inside out
After the flight use a mild exfoliant with AHA’s (try Skinstitut L-Lactic Acid Cleanser $45 – super hydrating and will leave your skin soft, silky and smooth)
Keep a lip balm on hand and avoid Pawpaw or Vaseline (try Dermal Therapy Lip Balm or Sun Sense lip balm 50+)
Never hurts to keep a hydrating masque on hand if you have the free luggage space. •

meet the team: ying sun

A little about your background… I grew up in Cairns where I started my hairdressing career before I moved to Brisbane 4 years ago. I have been in the industry for 8 years now and I love that it is constantly growing and changing.
Areas of expertise… I am a premier stylist, specialising in cutting. My absolute passion would be long hair whether it is giving a client a beautiful style cut and blow wave or dressing up hair into a stylish up do.
Career highlights… Working at Togninis. It is such an amazing salon with constant opportunities for growth, all while feeling like it is one big family. I can’t wait to see where the salon can take me in my career.
Hair tips… Apply a conditioner or masque to the mid-lengths and ends of the hair, not the roots. This will condition the hair but save the roots from getting that oily/slimy feel when the product is rinsed out.
Favourite food… I know I’m jumping on the bandwagon here but my favourite food at the moment is Nutella I can’t get enough!
Celebrity hair crush… Ricky martin is my hair crush, his hair is always perfectly styled, up-to-the-minute, and never out of place. •

meet the team: mj

A little bit about your background: I grew up in Wellington. My mum was a hairdresser, so I was always in the salon after school and on weekends. I flew to Brisbane in 2010 for a holiday and thought I would try my chances at getting a job. Five and a half years later, I am full time at AKA and loving it.
Areas of expertise: I am trained in both colour and cutting, but my area of expertise would be in men’s cutting and short hair. I also really enjoy styling long hair and up styling.
Career Highlights: I was chosen to accompany Benni to New Zealand, with Goldwell, for the New Zealand Hair Industry awards. It was the most high-pressure situation I've put myself in, but I gained the knowledge of smart colour placement and learnt how far you can push the boundaries. Presenting at Open Mic Night was also a highlight.
Hair Tips: If you have bright coloured hair like myself, use a high quality shampoo and conditioner, washing your hair only once a week. Otherwise use a dry shampoo (evo water killer).
Favourite Food: Tip Top Jelly Tip Ice Cream. New Zealand has the best ice cream! It will change your life. Can’t go wrong with Doughnut Time either!
Celebrity Hair Crush: Rihanna. Her hair is always changing and she loves creating new hair trends.•
